The Kobe Machizukuri Kaikan, opened in 1993, served as an evacuation site during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and continues to be a hub connecting the city and its residents.
The first floor houses a secondhand bookstore where locally donated books find new homes through recycling. The basement serves as a gallery, while the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th floors are rental spaces for activities ranging from Tai Chi classes to community meetings.
The 4th floor, "Machi Lab," holds over 6,000 accessible books (with a total collection exceeding 10,000), including disaster-related materials, local history, urban planning, community design, and local zines.
This library offers a rich collection of books related to city planning, which can be read or borrowed.
As both a library and a free space, Machi Lab hosts events by community organizations and businesses involved in urban development, providing a place to learn about the city through valuable resources and meet people actively contributing to Kobe’s community life.
