Following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, people demonstrated mutual compassion and support amidst the loss and destruction. Two weeks after the quake, FM YOBOSEYO, a radio station for Koreans in Japan to find friends and family, was launched by the Korean Residents Union in West Kobe. Simultaneously, the Takatori Church, already a center for minority support, established the Vietnam Disaster Relief Liaison, led by Father Kanda, for the Vietnamese community. YOBOSEYO’s organizers proposed launching a Vietnamese-language radio service at the church, resulting in FM YUMEN, a station broadcasting in Vietnamese and other languages. These two stations later merged, combining the initials “Y” from YOBOSEYO and “Y” from YUMEN, becoming FM YY. Today, FM YY continues as a media platform fostering mutual support. Operating from Takatori Community Center for nearly 30 years, it works alongside ten other civic groups, including Vietnamese and Latin American support organizations, women’s and family support groups, under the same roof.
