With widespread fires, Nagata Ward suffered extensive damage during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
The former Kobe City Futaba Elementary School, now the community facility "Futaba Gakusha," narrowly escaped the flames and became a refuge for displaced residents.
Though the school closed in 2008, it now serves as a center for disaster experience learning programs, welcoming participants from elementary students to adults (by reservation).
Visitors, including residents and participants from Japan, can engage in hands-on experiences like simulated evacuation and meal preparation led by instructors who survived the disaster.
Through sharing these lived experiences, Futaba Gakusha aims to build awareness and resilience for future disaster risk reduction.
