Shitamachi no Eki Rokken is a community space established in 2015, transforming an old neighborhood home through DIY renovations. The space serves as a rental area, providing locals with a place to bring their “I want to try this” ideas to life and share their unique skills. Residents host pop-up cafés, while workshops on self-care and wellness bring in those seeking personal growth. Working with local artists, the center revived the traditional “Jizo-bon” festival, drawing families and community members together. Inside, a collection of upcycled clothing from the neighborhood is sold. By creating ample opportunities for involvement, Rokken has become a natural gathering spot for parents, schoolchildren, support groups, and retirees ready for new ventures. It exemplifies social capital in action, building relationships, and community connections.
