The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art opened in 2002 as a symbol of "cultural recovery" following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, inheriting the legacy and collection of the former Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, founded in 1970. Designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, the museum is one of the largest in western Japan. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Rokko Mountain range to the north and the Seto Inland Sea and Kobe Port to the south, the museum offers a variety of exhibitions. These include special exhibitions showcasing Japanese and international artworks, collection exhibits of selected pieces from its vast collection of over 13,000 works, the Ando Gallery displaying architectural models and books related to Ando, as well as outdoor sculptures and scenic architectural features.
