The Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution highlights the pioneering work of Yuko Kuroda, a nurse who laid the foundations for disaster nursing volunteer efforts following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. After the quake, Kuroda left her hospital job to provide dedicated support to isolated survivors, profoundly influencing disaster response through her compassionate care. She emphasized the crucial role of nurses during disasters and the importance of holistic care for survivors, helping to define a new approach in disaster nursing. Following her passing, around 200 valuable materials related to her work were donated to the institution, providing an in-depth look at her experiences, challenges, and dedication on the front lines. These documents reveal the significance of compassionate support for isolated survivors and continue to guide research and practice in disaster nursing, underscoring the role of nursing in disaster recovery and community resilience.
